happy fathers day.

June 28th, 2010

I had my 2nd fathers day this past weekend. Emma bought us matching Adirondack chairs for the backyard.  They are awesome.  And while she doesn’t sit still long enough on hers to even take a photo – I plan to spend many many hours on mine :)

our chairs!

This was also my 3rd fathers day without my father.   I spent some time going through old photos and listening to his music – which is the reason for this post!  About 8 years ago for Christmas I made a CD of all my father’s music that he wrote and recorded during the first half of his life.  For those that don’t know – my father had a stroke when he was only 33 ( I was 3 months old).  The stroke paralyzed the right side of his body which left him unable to play his guitar anymore, and also altered his singing voice.

I made 25 of these CDs and gave them to family members as their gift that year. It was VERY time consuming since most of the recordings were on records from the late 60′s so you can only imagine the hiss and scratches on there.

For one of the songs (which was recorded AFTER his stroke with me playing the guitar) I was able to extract the guitar leaving only his vocals. I then recorded myself playing drums, bass, guitar and singing harmonies. It was pretty amazing to see his face when he listened to himself with a full band for the first time in his life. A moment I will certainly never forget.

So I thought I would share the song. It’s kind of rough, but it was fun! Click below.

A Little at a Time by Frank Hoven

I plan to post a bunch of his other songs here in a few weeks so check back!

Scents that are not poopy diaper.

March 19th, 2010

Because being a parent means having to smell way more poop than you ever imagined possible in a very up close and personal way  – as B puts it “There’s POOP on me AAARRRGGGGHHH!” – I have tried two products that help me conquer the stench.

The first is one for me.  Since having E-bug, I’m no longer inclined to wear my standard perfumes because I think they’re too strong for a little someone who is draped around my neck a good portion of the day (when I’m not at work, sigh).  I thought about getting a scent that I know she would enjoy, like citrus or vanilla.  But, then I figured those might make her even more hungry than she already is.

Side note: Our little gal seems to be eating 90% of the day.  Don’t make us go all Biggest Loser on you Emma.  Kidding.  I think she’s getting ready to start walking or something.  Or going into hibernation.  Seriously – the amount of food is astronomical.

Anyway, I popped into Ink & Peat, one of my favorite local shops with all sorts of goodies, and I remembered a line of perfumes that I used to love testing before I was expecting and became hypersensitive in the olfactory department.  After trying a few, I settled on Gin Rosewater No. 12 by Tokyo Milk.  It’s light, fresh, floral but not heavy, fruity but not make you hungry, and has gin in there somewhere.  How great is that?!  Sorry Simon – I’d rather be wearing gin these days than drinking it, but cheers.  The bottle is pretty and the price tag is really pretty.

The second product I have been using is a room spray.  I don’t really use air fresheners and for that I sincerely apologize to our guests.  Probably a bad move with poopy diapers, a hubby who runs “hot”, lots of eating veggies and cheese (sorry, Mom, for openly talking about flatulence), and three cats.

I don’t really like the idea of artificially making a room smell like flowers or pumpkin or whatever.  Except for the TJ’s orange spray for use in the potty (going to be calling it “the potty” for the next several years so deal with it) and some Lysol in the trash cans here and there, we don’t mask our household scent at all.  Candles, you ask?  I got over that obsession years ago.  Surprisingly, it really cut down on my shopping at Pier One.  Do they really have anything other than candle holders there?  (I’m sure they do and are very lovely [eye roll].)

Anyway, while shopping at my other favorite store New Seasons I stopped in the household goods aisle for just one second – B usually handles the TP and PTs elsewhere.  I saw a bottle of Mrs. Meyer’s Baby Blossom Room Freshener.  One sniff and I was sold!  It smelled gentle, fresh, clean, but relaxing all at the same time.  I probably don’t use it often enough and the scent does not seem to linger around all that long after you spray it, but I figure those are both good things for little E.

So that’s it.  Two light and fresh ways to quickly dispel poopy diaper odors from your immediate surroundings without triggering old lady cheap perfume nightmares.  Or making you hungry for cupcakes.  Have a lovely weekend and stay tuned for more Emma photos.  Smile.

PS – everyone head to LRBC for some of their newly prepared jams, syrups and other goodies.  I’m eying the Oregon Strawberry Pinot Noir myself.  Yummmmm!!!

Doctor’s Orders: Have fun!

February 17th, 2010

The family was a little sick this weekend.  Papa had a bug, Mama a cold, and E-bear has a new ear infection.  Ahh, the first year – I hear that this is pretty common but it does not make it any easier.

The result of all this sickness is that we spent most of the weekend laying low at home.  Emma is having so much fun crawling everywhere, even when she’s sick, so we put together some cardboard boxes and made her a tunnel.  SHE LOVES IT.  She chases the cats through the tunnel and plays with her toys in it.  We even cut some windows in it so she can peek outside.  If we sit on the other side of the tunnel she comes flying through, tongue hanging out!

We’re on the mend now and hoping for a better weekend coming up.

Pretty Valentine

February 14th, 2010

Just the prettiest darn Valentine you ever did see! Hope y’all have a very happy Valentines day!

Watch out Oprah!

February 9th, 2010

Over the weekend Amy taped a PSA (Public Service Announcement) for a legal volunteer organization here in Portland. She was so good that they asked her to read for other parts (though I feel bad for the people she will be replacing… well.. maybe not that bad).

It was fun. Emma loved cruising around at the studio and made lots of friends. So be sure to tune into your public access channels in Portland to watch!!

Used Musing

January 28th, 2010

There is a local estate store that supports the Community Warehouse (a good alternative to Goodwill) and their blog is pretty funny.  I often check it just to have a laugh and see the current offerings.  I’m on the hunt for a couple of old fan back Windsor chairs, which are pretty hard to come by in the Northwest.

This photo appeared in one of their posts and made me chuckle.  A friend recently reminded me of the french word for fox, renard, and now I’m noticing how often the estate store’s blog uses it.  They have a fox figurine who models the wares and it cracks me up.  A beaver has been showing up lately too.

This blogger gets my kudos for being silly, intelligent and comical while blogging about (often odd) used goods – something that I could never do.  Like this post. Seriously?  Hehe.

Check out the blog and the store, if you’re local.  Cheers!

Emma vs. Puppy

Something about a baby’s laugh. Just makes you smile.  Or the gigantic booties.  Those are pretty funny too.

Emma Break

January 8th, 2010

Just a quick break to post some recent pics of Emma from the holidays.  It was wonderful to have some time off work to spend with little bug.  We played, ate, napped, photographed, jogged, shopped, sat, crawled backwards…the list goes on and on!  Emma is eating all kinds of new food – tofu, kiwi, pasta, beets, cereal.  And, as of yesterday, she is crawling!  She only takes a few little “steps”, but it’s official.

We had a pot luck at E’s school last night and it was so much fun to see all her friends and watch how they interact with one another.  It was also fun to talk with the other parents and hear their tricks and tales.  I love her teachers to pieces and really appreciate the wonderful space and experience they give her.

Coming attractions for Emma include a possible trip snow shoeing this weekend using Daddy’s new Kelty carrier and a game night/play date with our pals Seth, Coley and Daisy.  Brian wants to see Avatar, but I think we’ll just let him watch Pocahontas.  Emma would like that better anyway.  Hehe.

Have a lovely weekend everyone!

Happy Birthday Dad.
